Brendan lost his first tooth! Not exactly the way we pictured it, but it's happened. At some point in the last year, he fell at daycare on the playground (that's our best guess anyway...) and chipped one of his front teeth. I remember brushing his teeth that night, because he had a fat lip and we noticed the chip. None of his teeth seemed loose though, so we just watched it and eventually forgot about it and got used to the small chip out of the front tooth. Several months - as many as 6 months - we began to notice a sore on Brendan's upper gum that would come and go. We didn't think too much of it as it didn't seem to bother him. Eventually, we decided it was really time to go to the dentist to have a first cleaning as well as have the spot checked out. We had talked to Papaw and were warned that it was likely an abscess. I was shocked, but glad for the warning.
So, we made it to the dentist. Brendan was a super star and did awesome. (Katelyn did great too! She cried once when they walked her to the panoramic x-ray machine and put the heavy lead on her. She wasn't even tall enough to stand there, so we quickly aborted that plan!) The dentist confirmed my fears that it was an abscess and that the tooth would need to be pulled.
After 10 days of yummy pink medicine, that Brendan will still ask for even weeks later, we went to a pediatric dentist who gave him some laughing gas, an injection and "wiggled" his tooth out. He did great! He complained I think once when we got home that he "wanted his tooth back" when he was drinking his milk out of his sippy cup - one of his comfort things. Otherwise, with a dose or two of Motrin, he hasn't looked back.
The tooth fairy visited him (and Baby Shadow) that night, leaving 5 quarters, 5 dimes, 5 nickels, and 5 pennies for Brendan. Baby Shadow got 2 bright shiny pennies - since she's only 2, not going on 5 like Brendan. :)
